IF A CONVENTION HOTEL IS NEEDED THEN PRIVATE INVESTORS SHOULD BUILD IT!

In the Macon Telegraph today, the Macon-Bibb County Convention and Visitors Bureau has a list of conventions and meetings brought to Macon for the fiscal year July 2004 through June 2005. Once again, our leaders are on a march to put the taxpayers into debt by wanting to help finance a convention hotel. If a convention hotel would be profitable in Macon, private investors would build it.

We have hotels with high vacancy rates most of the year in Macon, and until these rooms are at full capacity there will not be a private investor that will step up to the plate to invest in an expensive convention hotel. Government does not belong in business because it does nothing for the welfare of its citizens. If we back a convention hotel, then we will have the burden of the cost from here on out. I have yet to find a convention hotel anywhere in the United States that makes money.

We need to take care of what we have in Macon, and not take business away from the hotels that have invested in our community. It is mind boggling to see a City that has to borrow money to make payroll that is looking for ways to get further in debt. If you could not pay your mortgage payments on your home, do you think there would be a bank that would allow you to cosign on a family member's new home? Well this is the same situation, we cannot pay payroll here, but investors in this community want to use our bond rating to borrow money for a convention hotel. I am all for developments in the community, as long as tax dollars are not involved.
